2.2 Government documents.
2.2.1 Specifications and standards. The following specifications and standards form a
part of this document to the extent specified herein. Unless otherwise specified, the issues of
these documents should be those listed in the issue of the Department of Defense (DoD) Index of
Specifications and Standards (DoDISS) and supplement thereto, cited in the acquisition
requirements (see 6.21).

2.3 Order of precedence. In the event of a conflict between the text of this document and
the references cited herein, the text of this document takes precedence. Nothing in this
document, however, supersedes applicable laws and regulations unless a specific exemption has
been obtained.
3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1 First article. When specified (see 6.2), a sample shall be subjected to first article
testing inspection in accordance with paragraph 4.2.
3.2 Material. The sounding weights shall be made from pig lead conforming to grade B
of QQ-L-171.
3.3 Construction. The sounding weights shall be solid one-piece castings in the shape
and dimensions as shown in figure 1. Faces shall be flat and the eye shall be rounded at the
edges. Tolerances on all dimensions shall be plus or minus 1/16 inch.
3.4 Weight. The sounding weights shall conform to the weight shown in figure 1.
3.5 Marking. Each sounding weight shall be stamped on one side with the weight in
pounds, as shown in figure 1. Letters and numerals shall be approximately 5/16 inch high.
